James C. Monaghan
November 19, 1927 - February 02, 2016
Savannah- James C. Monaghan, Jr., 88, died Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at Hospice House.
Jim was born in New York City November 19, 1927 to James C. and Laurette Gaynor Monaghan. He proudly served in the US Army and spent many years as Marketing Manager with AMF for new product development. He and his wife, Anne Merchant Monaghan and their cat, arrived in Savannah on their sailboat in the summer of 1982. They moved into a marsh front lot on Tybee and were soon thoroughly involved in the community.
Commitments such as serving on the Tybee City Council and many of Tybee’s civic, arts and social organizations were met with enthusiasm. This included volunteering at the Tybee lighthouse, delivering stuffed animals to nursing home residents, and serving the homeless. Jim spent sixteen years with Solomon’s Properties and served as director and officer for a number of activities including the Navy League, Diocese Catholic School Board, Savannah Home Builders Association, and last but not least, the YEEPIES seniors group. He was a homebound Eucharistic Minister at St. Michael’s Catholic Church and later at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island. Anne, his beloved wife of 39 years passed away in June 2010.
Surviving are his children, James C. (Tripp) Monaghan, III and Shane Sturm.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
The Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 8, 2016 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Tybee Island.
To Shane and Tripp: My thoughts and prayers are with you. Jim meant so much to Bill, and He was the "big brother" I never had.
- Judy Monaghan, Saint Louis, MO
To the Monaghan family, Dave and I offer our condolences. We enjoyed Jim's friendship ever since we moved to Tybee in 2002. He was a kind and thoughtful man who never said or felt a bad thing about anyone. We know we will miss him but hope you receive comfort from the Joy and Hope of his arrival in Heaven with Anne.
